Scotland: Injuries take gloss off Scotland win

Scotland manager Craig Levein is sweating over the fitness of Allan McGregor after a morale-boosting 3-1 win over Australia was marred slightly by injury. The goalkeeper was forced out of the action after 22 minutes, meaning a debut for Matt Gilks earlier than planned in the friendly at Easter Road. James Morrison, Jordan Rhodes, Alan Hutton and Danny Fox also picked up knocks but - with World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Macedonia looming next month - McGregor is the biggest concern.Levein said: "He landed awkwardly and somehow he has damaged his groin. It was quite bad, certainly going by the pain he was in after the game. It's a big disappointment, it really is. The good thing is that Gilksy got about 75 minutes and pulled off one outstanding save. In general, I thought he was pretty assured."Levein went on: "I've got David Marshall as well but I hope that Allan is fit because he has established himself as our number one goalkeeper and I would like him to be fit and available."The manager added: "The two full-backs went off injured and Morrison went off after rolling his ankle. Jordan's hamstring was tight at half-time. The goalkeeper went off and he's the worst of the lot."We had five players who came off through injury and I don't like sending players back to their clubs with injuries, particularly after a friendly match. I don't mind so much if it's a competitive game so it's disappointing."A major positive was Rhodes marking his first Scotland start with his first senior international goal. The striker earned the call-up after netting 40 goals for Huddersfield - and eight for the under-21s - last season.Levein said: "You don't like to put any pressure on a young guy making his starting debut in international football but he kind of put the pressure on himself with his record of scoring goals."He handled it extremely well. He did what I've watched him do countless times, whenever the ball is in the box, he has this fantastic ability to anticipate where it's going to drop and he did it again."He could have had three goals in the first half. I thought he handled the occasion exceptionally well, considering the pressure that was on him." Source: PA
