Premier League: How can rivals stop Man City in 2018-19 season?

Nineteen teams tried to prevent Manchester City winning a Premier League game last season. Only six managed it. In 2017-18, City earned more English top-flight points than any other team in history and registered more wins and scored more goals than any other Premier League side before them. They also recorded the most consecutive wins, attempted and completed the most passes in a game and spent the least amount of time behind in matches - a remarkably brief 153 minutes over the whole campaign. That is just 4.5% of their season. In preparation for the 2018-19 season, the champions have splashed out a club record

Burnley beats Aberdeen to progress to Europa League

Burnley edged through to the next round of the Europa League, but only after a tense extra-time victory over Scottish Premiership runners-up Aberdeen. Jack Cork's header and an Ashley Barnes penalty - both in the additional half-hour - saw the Premier League side through to face Istanbul Basaksehir. Chris Wood had put Burnley 2-1 ahead on aggregate with an early strike. But a competitive Aberdeen levelled just before the half hour through Lewis Ferguson's stunning overhead kick. Goalkeeper Joe Lewis made fabulous saves from Barnes and Sam Vokes - tipping the Welshman's header on to the bar - to force the tie into extra time. But Cork's effort from a Charlie Taylor delivery, and Barnes' spot-kick after Scott McKenna was adjudged to have handled a Johann Berg Gudmundsson cross, ensured Burnley will face Turkish opposition in the third qualifying round. The first leg will be played next Thursday, with the return seven days later to decide who will advance to the play-off round.

Anthony Martial: Manchester United forward to return on Thursday after daughter's birth

Anthony Martial says he will return to Manchester United on Thursday after the birth of his daughter, adding that "family will always come first". Martial, 22, left the club's tour of the United States last week. He has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford and it is understood manager Jose Mourinho is willing to sell the France forward. He said on social media his daughter was fine and "for the mom it was harder but thanks to God she's better now". "Sorry but my family will always come first," he added. Martial has had his first-team opportunities limited by the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January. He scored 11 goals in 45 appearances last season but failed to make the France World Cup squad. The forward, who arrived from Monaco for

Willian: Chelsea midfielder asks lawyers to act on 'forged' letter

Chelsea midfielder Willian says he has instructed his lawyers to act after a "forged" document was circulated on the "football market". The letter appears to show the 29-year-old's signature authorising a change of agent to represent him. However, Willian claimed he "never signed the letter" in an Instagram post on Thursday. Willian has been linked with moves to Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona this summer. In the post, Willian said he had been made aware of a document that "has been circulated through the football market". "I would like to clarify that I never signed such letter, the content of which I completely deny," he added. And he alleged there was "clear evidence that my signature has been forged, or anyway misused", which had prompted him to instruct his lawyers "to proceed with all appropriate legal measures before any competent courts or authorities". The midfielder, who has spent five years at Chelsea, was due to report to pre-season training with the Blues last Friday, after representing Brazil at the World Cup in Russia, but he failed to arrive. New manager Maurizio Sarri says he is not happy about the "strange" situation, and he will seek immediate talks with Willian.

Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea: Petr Cech saves crucial penalty as Gunners win shootout

Petr Cech saved penalties in normal time and in a shootout as Arsenal beat his old club Chelsea in the International Champions Cup in Dublin. The Gunners' keeper denied Alvaro Morata from the spot in the first half as the Blues dominated, with Antonio Rudiger heading them in front. Arsenal improved after the break and Alexandre Lacazette equalised with 17 seconds left to earn a shootout. Both sides scored their first five, but Cech saved from Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea side face Premier League champions Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday in the Community Shield, while Arsenal boss Unai Emery has injury worries before the new season after losing both Aaron Ramsey and Sead Kolasinac. Ramsey, who was listed on the teamsheet to start, suffered a muscle injury in the warm-up and was replaced by 18-year-old Emile Smith Rowe in the starting XI. Kolasinac appeared to hurt his knee in a challenge with Victor Moses and will have a scan. "We will wait for the medical analysis but we think it's not a big one," said Emery. "For Kolasinac it might be different. We will wait for a scan to know better."

Man Utd 1-4 Liverpool: Xherdan Shaqiri scores stunning overhead kick

Xherdan Shaqiri scored an exquisite overhead kick as Liverpool thrashed Manchester United 4-1 in the International Champions Cup in front of 101,254 fans in Ann Arbor. Jose Mourinho named a starting XI including five players who did not feature in the Premier League for United last season, while Liverpool fielded a strong side featuring Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. Jurgen Klopp's team took the lead on 26 minutes when Mane stroked home from the penalty spot after Salah was brought down by Demetri Mitchell. But their advantage did not last long as United levelled through Andreas Pereira's superb free-kick from 25 yards. Liverpool substitute Daniel Sturridge continued his impressive pre-season form when he scored with his first touch after 66 minutes before Sheyi Ojo added his side's second spot-kick of the game six minutes later.
